The African cryptocurrency landscape is witnessing significant developments this week, marked by strategic partnerships and regulatory progress. In South Africa, leading digital asset exchange VALR has announced a pivotal partnership with Mukuru, a major remittance and financial services platform. According to a press release confirmed by VALR, this collaboration will leverage USDC stablecoins to enhance payment infrastructure. VALR, which secured a crucial Over-the-Counter Derivatives Provider license from the South African Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) in October 2024, will provide the crypto infrastructure for Mukuru's extensive user base of over 17 million.

Simultaneously, Kenya is experiencing tangible growth in crypto accessibility following the enactment of its landmark Virtual Assets Service Providers Act, which came into force on November 4, 2024. Reports from local news outlets confirm the installation of new Bitcoin Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) at major Nairobi shopping centers, including the Two Rivers Mall. These ATMs provide a direct gateway for users to buy and sell Bitcoin, operating within the country's new regulatory framework that mandates licensing for crypto service providers.

On a continental scale, the IOTA Foundation is collaborating with the World Economic Forum and the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change on the Africa Digital Access and Public Infrastructure for Trade (ADAPT) initiative. As outlined on the World Economic Forum's official website, ADAPT aims to create a borderless digital trade system, with stablecoin payments as a core component. The initiative, which has conducted pilots in Kenya and Rwanda, seeks to establish a pan-African digital infrastructure by 2035, potentially revolutionizing cross-border commerce while navigating the complex dynamics of external technological influence on the continent's financial future.
