New artificial intelligence (AI) tools are helping save the cultural traditions of indigenous and marginalized communities. These tools focus on preserving languages, folklore, oral stories, and community wisdom. Experts say culturally aware AI systems can help communities pass down their heritage to future generations. These systems must respect and reflect the unique identities of each community to be effective.

Developers are creating AI that captures endangered languages and builds interactive tools for learning. For example, AI can record oral histories, which are spoken stories passed down through generations. This helps people stay connected to their cultural roots. AI can preserve lullabies, recipes, and idioms—short phrases with cultural meanings. When AI includes these traditions, it supports communities by carrying forward their knowledge and values.

Protecting language

Working with communities ensures AI tools fit their traditions and values. For instance, Howard University and Google created speech datasets for African American Vernacular, a unique way of speaking. These datasets could improve voice recognition systems, which let devices understand spoken words.

Similarly, AI is protecting native languages at risk of disappearing. UNESCO says 3,000 languages may vanish in the next century. One example is Māori, a language in New Zealand. Māori technologists at Te Hiku Media built an AI model to keep their language alive despite global pressures.

However, challenges exist when AI processes cultural content without proper understanding. These problems show why cultural experts should participate in AI development. The book "AI for Community" argues that AI offers hope for preserving linguistics and cultural heritage if developers address these issues carefully.

“This technology is opening up new ways to capture and share cultural knowledge,” says co-author Davar Ardalan in a press release. “We’re seeing AI used to record endangered languages, create interactive learning tools, and even preserve oral histories, offering people new ways to connect with their roots.”
