Short sellers got destroyed. On August 20, bearish crypto bets lost a record $2.7 billion in just 24 hours as Bitcoin blasted past $70,000 for the first time since June. More than $1 billion of those short positions were liquidated in a single hour, pushing BTC from around $65,000 to nearly $69,500 in a violent squeeze that surpassed every short liquidation event on record going back to at least 2021.
This was not a gradual unwind. Six weeks of price compression below $65,000 had built up an enormous pool of leveraged bearish bets. When Bitcoin finally broke out amid Trump's White House crypto summit and the SEC's proposed Regulation Crypto Assets, that compressed spring snapped hard. CoinGlass and CoinDesk data shows total bearish losses exceeded $4 billion across August 19 and 20, with 92% of all liquidations hitting short positions.
The squeeze itself became the fuel. Forced buy-backs from liquidated shorts created a self-reinforcing loop that carried Bitcoin all the way past $79,000 by August 24, a move few traders anticipated. Bitcoin ETFs pulled in $517 million that day while Ether attracted $189 million, the largest inflows in months.
The crypto market is entering a phase where institutional capital and AI-driven trading strategies are accelerating both upside and downside, making extreme liquidation events more likely. As Bitcoin's dominance shifts and capital rotates between tokens, the risk of similar squeeze-driven volatility stays elevated.
