Researchers at the University of Maryland have found that methylene blue, a drug first developed in the 1800s, may help stimulate hair regeneration by protecting hair follicle stem cells from oxidative and metabolic stress. [1]
Published in the journal Aging, the study showed that methylene blue boosted stem cell growth, reduced harmful reactive oxygen species, accelerated wound healing, and activated the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, a key mechanism linked to hair regeneration.
The researchers also found that combining methylene blue with minoxidil, the widely used hair-loss treatment, produced a stronger regenerative effect than either treatment alone.
In another striking finding, the compound appeared to protect hair follicle stem cells from damage caused by GLP-1 receptor agonists, a class of weight-loss drugs increasingly associated with reports of hair thinning.
The team cautioned that the experiments were conducted in vitro using human hair follicle stem cells, meaning clinical trials and animal studies will still be needed before methylene blue can be confirmed as a treatment for hair loss or scalp aging.
