On May 18, 2026, the global cryptocurrency market capitalization dropped approximately 3.8 percent to $2.56 trillion, erasing more than $180 billion in value since the previous week's warning. The sell-off was driven by escalating military tensions between the United States and Iran, surging oil prices above $107 per barrel, and rising Treasury yields that signaled renewed inflation concerns.

Bitcoin fell as much as 2.2 percent to a two-week low of $76,551 before recovering slightly to trade near $76,800. Ethereum dropped nearly 6 percent toward $2,100, while major altcoins including Solana, XRP, BNB, Dogecoin, and Cardano posted losses between 3 percent and 12 percent. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index fell from 48 (neutral) to 28 (fear), reflecting heightened trader caution.

The immediate catalyst was a late-Sunday Truth Social post by President Donald Trump, who warned Iran that "the clock is ticking" and urged the country to negotiate or face destruction. With the Strait of Hormuz largely closed to oil tankers, Brent crude rose above $110 per barrel, feeding into broader inflation data. The US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.63 percent, its highest level since January 2025.

Leverage amplified the downturn. According to Coinglass data, more than $670 million in crypto futures positions were liquidated in 24 hours, with bullish long trades accounting for nearly 95 percent of the wipeout. Ethereum led the losses at $256 million, followed by Bitcoin at $180 million. Spot Bitcoin ETFs also recorded weekly outflows exceeding $1 billion.

Traders are now awaiting the Federal Reserve's May meeting minutes and flash PMI data later this week for further monetary policy clues.
