Generative AI has so many masks and one of its personas could be the "Internet Killer". Without a doubt, it is Google's search engine that built the modern open web via its magical matchmaking which served web browsers as the nearly perfect gateway to the best website. Alarmingly, the same search engine is now walling the internet off! A recent investigation published in New York Times spilled how Google's aggressive integration of Generative AI into its beloved browser's search engine is systematically starving independent websites of the traffic they need to survive.
The data is starkly loud. Between June 2025 and April 2026, human traffic to websites in finance, publishing, and retail dropped nearly 40%. There is no complicated factor and the reason is as straightforward as the once beloved Google Search Engine results: after a user's query, Google provides AI-generated overviews as answers directly on its search page. The need to click on the best website to dig for the answer is no longer the next natural action; the AI will even do a follow-up, and right there and then users can start a chat!
The decline in traffic to websites is no longer speculation and it's the inevitable consequence of integrating a generative AI into search engines. A separate study by SparkToro claimed that the traffic decline of Google searches is as high as 68% during the first four months of 2026. Some websites are now claiming they have ended the last three monthes without a single click to any of their pages while their former users still get the information they exclusively provide from the serach engine.
The Publisher Collapse
For most online media businesses, the downstream consequences are devastating. HubSpot estimates it lost up to 80% of its Google referral traffic since the rollout of generative AI overviews. Mid-size publishers across the web are reporting revenue declines of, as high as, 60%, resulting in mass layoffs, consolidations, and in some cases closure. The NYT report notes that some publishers are now actively preparing to opt out of Google indexing entirely. This move was once considered commercial suicide. The concerning factor now is whether the move is just another painkiller which may prolong the inevitable commercial suicide?
Is it meaningful to call something inevitable 'alarming'? Before we conclude on that, what is the inevitable? According to many technology analysts, Google Zero is inevitable! What is Goolgel Zero? The term was first coined in 2024 by Nilay Patel, the editor-in-chief of The Verge. He said when Google stops acting as a gateway to the open web and instead becomes a fully-fledged answer engine, serving up responses directly, without sending users to external sources, that is your Google Zero stage in the evolution of search engines.
Now as a response to this 'alarming' evolution of search engines and their marriage with generative AI, some media companies are remodeling, entirely, their business models. According to Digiday's report some of the answers lie in the B2B approach or in building brands that are bigger than the website, or paid subscriptions and newsletters. One way or another, the irony is beyond the structural clash: Google's multibillion‑dollar business stands on advertisement deals with websites and, as well, on the priceless data from the very web content they are now making invisible."
