Meta Platforms is developing a cloud infrastructure business that will sell access to AI computing power and models, setting up a direct challenge to Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud [1].
The effort would mark a sharp strategic shift for Meta, which until now has built its AI capacity almost entirely for internal use across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and its Llama model family. Bloomberg reported that the company plans to sell excess AI compute to outside customers, turning its massive infrastructure buildup into a revenue-generating cloud service.
The move comes as Meta's capital spending has exploded. The company recently raised its investment in the Hyperion data center campus in Louisiana to more than $50 billion, expanding the facility to five gigawatts of compute capacity [2]. That scale of buildout far exceeds what Meta needs for its own products, making a cloud resale play a logical next step.
If executed, Meta would enter a market dominated by three players that collectively control roughly two-thirds of global cloud infrastructure. Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are themselves on track to spend a combined $725 billion on capex in 2026, nearly all of it tied to AI. Meta's entry would add a fourth deep-pocketed competitor to an already crowded field.
