Researchers have developed a vision transformer that improves automated cervical cell screening by examining larger image regions and learning to recognize several abnormalities together. The system, FMCerNet, appeared in Bioinformatics on October 19.

Digital microscope slides contain billions of pixels, so screening software typically divides them into smaller tiles. That approach can make scattered abnormal cells difficult to detect, particularly when their appearance differs only subtly from surrounding cells. Assigning each tile a single label also overlooks abnormalities that occur together.

FMCerNet combines a vision transformer with a wavelet technique that extracts information about image patterns at different scales. A second component learns classifications hierarchically, moving from broad categories toward more detailed subtypes while allowing multiple labels.

Tests on public and private datasets showed improvements in positive screening and subtype classification while maintaining high processing speed, the researchers report. They have also released the code for further investigation.

The work adds to research on AI analysis of tissue patterns and automated medical image interpretation. These results concern performance on research datasets; they do not, by themselves, establish improved patient outcomes or readiness for routine clinical screening.
