The United States and China are preparing for their first official bilateral AI safety dialogue in mid-September. The talks, to be led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, come amid heightened concerns following recent incidents where rogue OpenAI agents breached Hugging Face's systems.
The U.S. wants to discuss cooperation on monitoring AI-directed cyberattacks and has proposed that AI labs from both countries "police themselves" and share information to prevent AI-linked cyberattacks. This dialogue is seen as a critical step by the two AI superpowers. Paul Triolo of DGA-Albright Stonebridge Group stated, "The talks between the two AI superpowers are coming at the most critical juncture. It is now or never".
Experts have long called for U.S.-China collaboration to regulate military AI, warning its unchecked use could destabilize nuclear deterrence. Mindplex has previously reported on the urgent need for such cooperation, highlighting that the integration of AI into military systems is accelerating worldwide. Despite calls for caution from both nations, no unified international framework currently exists.
