Google surprises users: Its most advanced AI, Gemini 2.5 Pro, now free—with reasoning skills rivaling ChatGPT and Claude.
While OpenAI’s GPT-4o dominated AI discussions last week, Google quietly rolled out Gemini 2.5 Pro—its most powerful AI model yet—to paying Gemini Advanced users. Now, in a surprising move, the company is making the upgraded model available to free users as well, though with some limitations.
Google claims Gemini 2.5 Pro outperforms competitors in multiple benchmarks, ranking #1 on LMArena by a “significant margin.” Unlike standard AI models, Gemini 2.5 is designed as a “thinking” model, analyzing information, drawing logical conclusions, and making nuanced decisions before responding.
“Reasoning allows AI to go beyond simple classification and prediction,” Google explained, signaling its push to integrate these capabilities across all its AI tools. While OpenAI was first to market with reasoning in ChatGPT o1, competitors like DeepSeek (with its R1 model) and Anthropic’s Claude (via the 3.7 Sonnet update) have since caught up.
With Gemini 2.5, Google aims to close the gap, offering users—both free and paid—a smarter, more context-aware AI experience.
