Elon Musk and his team at xAI managed to set up 100,000 Nvidia H200 GPUs in just 19 days, a task that usually takes about 4 years, Tom’s Hardware reports. This rapid setup was for xAI’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) system Grok.

Normally, setting up this many GPUs, which are special computer parts for processing complex calculations, would take years because of the need for space, cooling systems, and power supply adjustments. However, Musk’s team did it incredibly fast.

This is “superhuman,” said NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang in a video. Elon Musk and the xAI team put together what is easily the fastest supercomputer on the planet in only about 19 days, Huang said, adding that “there’s only one person in the world who could do that.” This part of the Huang interview begins shortly after minute 46 in the video.

Musk’s team achieved this spectacular feat with pre-planning, modular design for quick assembly, and innovative engineering solutions for cooling and power. They did something very difficult very quickly, which marks a significant step in how quickly technology can be scaled up for big projects.

GPUs are crucial for running AI models because they handle lots of data and complex math at once. Getting so many to work together in such a short time is a big deal because it involves not just plugging them in, but also making sure they work efficiently without overheating or other issues.

AI for science

These GPUs are for Grok, the AI that xAI designed to accelerate scientific discovery. The idea is to use supercomputers to process and analyze data at speeds unachievable by human researchers alone, potentially leading to faster advancements in science.

With such a powerful setup, xAI’s Grok could lead to breakthroughs in various fields by processing vast amounts of data to find patterns or solutions much quicker than before. This might include anything from medical research to understanding complex systems. The recent Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry have highlighted the unique potential of AI to help rapidly advance science.

The spectacular achievements of Elon Musk and his various teams are becoming too many to count. Now, if only those who rabidly hate Elon Must would shut up.
