Discover how Microsoft spent billions to make OpenAI's ChatGPT possible, and revolutionized AI infrastructure.
Microsoft’s billion-dollar spend on the infrastructure for OpenAI’s ChatGPT demonstrates the company’s commitment to AI and also it’s fantastic cost. According to Bloomberg, Microsoft spent “several hundred million dollars” on the computing infrastructure needed to develop ChatGPT, which was created by OpenAI, an AI startup in which Microsoft previously invested $10 billion.
The Azure supercomputer that powers OpenAI’s projects was built with thousands of Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs). Microsoft was able to provide the computing power required to train increasingly capable AI models by connecting these GPUs.
Microsoft is continuing to invest in AI infrastructure. Azure’s AI capabilities have been enhanced with the addition of new virtual machines that use Nvidia’s H100 and A100 Tensor Core GPUs linked together via Quantum-2 InfiniBand, an accelerated networking architecture. This will enable OpenAI and other AI companies to train larger and more complex models.
Microsoft and OpenAI collaborated to create ChatGPT, an AI chatbot that has taken the internet by storm due to its impressive, humanlike conversational ability. Microsoft’s investment in AI infrastructure demonstrates not only the company’s commitment to AI advancement and making powerful AI technology accessible to businesses and individuals, but also that create AI is not for the faint-hearted!
