A massive US-led project eyes global expansion, initially in the UK, to power artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Stargate, a $500 billion US data center project, aims to build infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI). OpenAI, a company creating AI tools, and SoftBank, a major investor, lead the effort. They plan to spend $100 billion initially, possibly reaching $500 billion in four years. The project started in the US, with a data center in Abilene, Texas. It also explores sites in 16 US states.
The UK is a top choice for future investment, Financial Times reports (unpaywalled copy). The UK government pushes to grow its AI industry. It plans to improve energy access for developers. This interests Stargate, as data centers use a lot of power. Germany and France are also potential investment spots. OpenAI sees the UK as a key market outside the US. Initially, Stargate will serve only OpenAI.
Global Expansion and Challenges
The project focuses on US growth first, aiming to start construction soon. International expansion, like in the UK, depends on success. The UK’s AI Energy Council, formed recently, works to ensure enough power for AI projects. Developers often face delays connecting to the electricity grid and high energy costs. OpenAI has pushed European governments to ease rules and fund data centers. The European Commission recently announced plans to invest in AI infrastructure and simplify its AI Act, a law regulating powerful AI systems.
Stargate is raising $100 billion to start. SoftBank will provide billions through loans and ownership stakes. It talks with insurers, private equity firms, and financial companies for more funds. However, challenges arise from new US tariffs, which are taxes on imported goods. These tariffs disrupt supply chains, raising costs for data center parts. A 145 percent tariff on China could add $11 billion yearly to US data center costs, according to Altana, a supply chain analysis firm. Despite hurdles, Stargate remains committed to its massive AI infrastructure plan.
