IBM researchers have developed a plugin that lets developers inspect and adjust language models during generation without sacrificing much of the speed gained from optimized inference software.

Announced October 21, vLLM-Hook MIA addresses a practical obstacle: tools that examine internal model activity often require disabling the fast execution features of vLLM, a widely used inference engine.

The plugin preserves graph replay, which speeds processing by reusing recorded sequences of GPU operations. Developers can select internal states to capture or alter, while the system manages those interventions within the accelerated workflow.

IBM reports that steering added just 2% overhead in some tests with smaller models and 6% with a Llama 70B model. These figures describe particular experimental configurations, not guaranteed performance across every deployment.

The work connects research into models’ internal representations with techniques for steering their responses. Its contribution is making such interventions more practical while models are serving requests.

The open-source release includes a technical report and integrates with IBM’s Steerability toolkit. Faster access to internal activity could support monitoring and control, but the plugin itself does not establish that a model’s answers are accurate or safe.
