ORCA Computing has launched PT-3, a photonic quantum computer designed to work alongside conventional high-performance computing infrastructure, with reported advances in artificial intelligence and industrial optimization.
Installed at Digital Realty’s Innovation Lab in London, PT-3 operates alongside NVIDIA accelerated computing systems. The company says its hybrid approach extended NVIDIA’s Proteína protein-design model, improving the proportion of useful proteins identified by 20% compared with a classical baseline.
The system was also tested on a large-scale energy optimization problem involving 25,755 variables, producing solutions the company describes as competitive with leading commercial optimization software.
The announcement comes as researchers pursue quantum computing methods for solving difficult optimization problems, while continuing to investigate how quantum processors could extend AI capabilities.
PT-3's modular, upgradeable architecture is intended to make quantum computing more accessible for practical workloads. However, the reported performance results remain company claims and do not establish universal quantum advantage over classical computers.
