Physicists find 'Cheshire Cat' grin of superconductivity in uranium ditelluride
Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have observed pair density waves in uranium ditelluride, confirming a 20-year-old prediction that Cooper pairs can exist above the superconducting critical temperature. This discovery provides the first direct evidence of a peculiar quantum state where electron pairs form patterns even when the main superconducting phase has vanished.
